Young Talent on Display at the QLD Youth Championships

Published Fri 23 Sep 2022

Day two of the 2022 Queensland Youth Championships arrived in style today with glamour sailing conditions presenting a fantastic day on the water for all.

Hosted by Keppel Bay Sailing Club in Yeppoon, the event saw its 200 entrants and staff in high spirits as they launched into the bay to near perfect weather.

Regatta Manager Michael Robinson noted they couldn’t have asked for better weather after such a windy first day.

“We’ve got absolutely glorious conditions here at Keppel Bay today. About 10-12 knots with the wind not moving too much,” said Robinson.

“These juniors will be able to put into practice everything they’ve learned from their coaches over the last three days, and really get out there and enjoy themselves.”

Far more about tactics and strategy, the second day of the Regatta saw some cement their positions from day one.

In the Optimist Open class, leader Henry Piggott (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) continues to sail a perfect Regatta aboard Flying Cloud, winning six from six in a field of 20 boats.

“My game plan was to protect the right as the breeze was on the right most of the time,” began Piggott.

“I was playing the shifts on the right-hand side and keeping the boat fast and flat which worked pretty well as I was able to come away with three firsts which I’m pretty happy with.”

Also on the Alpha Course, Corrado Dorrington (Mordialloc Sailing Club) is leading the fleet in the Open Skiff class with a series score of five after six races.

Frances Beebe (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) had a strong day on the water in the Laser Radial class, finishing the afternoon at the top of the rankings and maintaining her position from day one. Only four points behind, Myles Wilson (Southport Yacht Club) and Hugo Ralph (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) are tied on a series score of 14, and will no doubt be looking to battle it out on the water on the final day of the Regatta.

In the Laser 4.7 class, former world champion Breanne Wadley (Tinaroo Sailing Club) managed another three top-five finishes, securing her as the one to beat. Not far behind her, Joshua King (Whitsunday Sailing Club) and Angus McIntyre (Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron) will have their sights set on closing the gap on the final day of the Regatta.

Lucas Patrick and Luke Rogers (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) are currently in the lead on the 29er course, securing four from four first place finishes on day two. In the Nacra 15 class, Will Nobes and Hana-lena Jenkin (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) are the team to beat, though will have to keep an eye out for competitors Isabella Wilson and Kris Bilston (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) who are not far behind.

It’s anyone’s game in the RsFeva class, with the top three crews within four points of one another. In the lead after day two, Jeremy Liu and Maddison Black (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) will be looking to extend their lead on day three.

All teams will be looking to sail their best on the final day of the Regatta, with three more races scheduled to take place before the results are decided.
