Australia's Paris van den Herik has claimed the bronze medal in the girls single handed racing in the first week of competition at the Pacific Games.
"It was a huge learning experience for me" said Van Den Herik. "It was such an honour to represent Australia. The Samoans are all so happy and helpful this has been an amazing experience."
Claiming medals in the inaugural Oceania Kite boarding championships that were run in conjunction with the Pacific Games were Australia's Logan McCormick and Levi Fowler who placed first and second over all in the racing. Conditions were challenging with primarily light breezes for the week.
Australia is well represented at the regatta with David Brookes appointed by World Sailing as the International Technical Delegate. Serving on the International Jury is Howard Elliott and Damien Boldyrew and Chairman of the Technical Committee and responsible for equipment inspection is Graeme Harbour.
There was also a clinic and racing conducted in for the Hansa 303. Russell Phillips represented Australia and finished 3rd in the Oceania Championship. Australia's Jon Sanderson was appointed by World Sailing to help run the clinic with the aim to build sailing for sailors with a disabilities in Oceania.
Racing is underway in week two in the Men's Single hander being raced in the Laser full rig, and the Open Catamaran being sailed in the Hobbie 16.
Lasers are sailing in split fleets and after six races Will Sargent racing in the Laser is tied in third place after six second place. Tom and Sarah improved on the second day of racing sailing a 2,4 & 5 and are fifth overall. Points are very close and they are right in the mix with the experienced Hobie crews from New Caledonia and Fiji.
