Plain sailing expected for Aussies at Pacific Games

Published Tue 09 Jul 2019

Four of Australia’s finest young sailors have arrived in Samoa to compete with the Australian Pacific Games Team.

The team representing Australia at the 2019 Pacific Games consists of Will Sargent (Boys single handed), Paris van den Herik (Girls single handed) and Sarah Hoffman and Thomas Dawson in the Hobie 16.

The sailing events will take place at Mulifanua – a village on the second-largest Samoan island named Upolu one hour away from the Samoan capital, Apia.

Yesterday saw the boat draw, after which optimist sailors from the Apia Yacht club presented all visiting competitors with hand drawn ‘good luck’ wishes & bikkies.

The opening ceremony on Sunday night was an amazing spectacle leading up to the lighting of the games torch.

Torrential tropical rain pelted down all afternoon, creating car parks of mud, but fortunately the skies cleared and the rain stopped just as the athlete parade kicked off the opening ceremony.
