The 2018 NSW Youth Championships presented by Lake Macquarie City Council is set to be one of the biggest ever with a record number of boats entered to take on the competition on Lake Macquarie.
Whether it’s the picturesque lake, world-class beaches or general laid-back coastal lifestyle there’s definitely something in the water that fuels success. Lake Maquarie is home to not only Olympic sailors, Iain Jensen, Will Ryan, Kyle Langford as well as Nathan & Haylee Outteridge it’s also playing host to the biggest NSW Youth Championship with over 315 boats coming from around the country to compete on the Lake.
Australian Sailing Performance and Pathway Coordinator and Lake Macquarie local, Tony Outteridge is very excited to see such a big event come to Lake Macquarie.
“It is fantastic to see such a huge number of entries in the NSW Youth Championships this year, it’s a real bonus for local, smaller member-run clubs to host such a big event and just goes to show how much everyone enjoys sailing.” Said Outteridge.
Tony Outteridge mentions that this particular regatta is usually one of the first major regatta for young sailors and given this year’s fleet sizes the competition will be of a very high quality.
“There is no question that the level of competition will be extremely high, especially in what we refer to as “Pathway Classes”. NSW has traditionally been very strong in these classes and as a result the event attracted a quite a number of interstate sailors keen to see how they measure up against the NSW sailors.” Said Outteridge.
A testing weather forecast is predicted for the first day of racing with southerlies expected to pick up throughout the day. The good news is that the final two days will be a little more settled and predictable for the race management team.
