Countdown is on to 2019 Tasmanian Youth Championships

Published Mon 25 Feb 2019

The 2019 Tasmanian Youth Championships are set to kick off at the Sandy Bay Sailing Club in Hobart on Saturday 2 March, with a strong line-up of competitors already registered to compete at Tasmania’s premier annual youth sailing regatta.

Sandy Bay Sailing Club is ready to add to its long record of hosting major youth regattas, after having successfully hosted the International Cadet and Optimist Australian Championships over the New Year period. Those regattas have set the stage for what should be an exciting 2019 Tasmanian Youth Championships, the first State Youth Championship of the calendar year.

This year’s major class divisions will include the 29ers, Laser 4.7, Radial, Int Cadets, Flying 11s, Optis, Sabots and Bic Techno windsurfers. The Bic Techno is a growing class in Tasmania, and a mixed division may be formed at this year’s championships depending on the final number of entrants.

There has been strong interest across the board in this year’s Youth Championships, with entries expected to grow this week with fleets to be headlined by an exciting mix of youth sailors.

In the Female 29er class, Alice Buchanan and Dervla Duggan will be tough to beat after taking out the Australian Youth Championships in Hobart in January. In the Laser Radials, William Sargent and Nick Smart are the two to watch having finished 10th and 12th respectively at the same National Youth Championships.

Eddie Reid is expected to lead the fleet in the Optimist Class after his 2nd place at the recent Australian Opti Championships, but hot on his heels will be fellow Australian Opti Team members Adelaide O’Donoghue and Eddie Broadby.

The Laser 4.7 is set to be an intriguing contest, with a relatively open fleet expected to produce new champions after a number of last year’s leaders having moved over to the 29er class.

The Cadet class will be another to watch. Hugo Allison and James Gough come in to the regatta in great form having recently won the Australian International Cadet Championship, a regatta at which they narrowly defeated fellow Sandy Bay Sailing Club members Archie Ibbott and Sam Hooper.
