Become a maritime industry specialist

Published Mon 10 Dec 2018

If you love the water and are interested in a career in the maritime industry, the Australian Maritime College provides the training and qualifications that will get you there.

Whether you want to help design, build and sustain Australia’s next generation of warships, work out at sea on coastal or oceangoing vessels, or keep the world moving as part of the global logistics industry, you’ll be taught by industry-leading experts and have access to some of the best facilities in the world.

AMC is a specialist institute of the University of Tasmania located in Launceston, Northern Tasmania, and highly regarded as Australia’s national institute for maritime education, training and research.

The College offers a wide range of courses and programs spanning the areas of coastal and ocean seafaring, maritime logistics and international business, and maritime engineering and hydrodynamics. Qualifications start from vocational certificates and diplomas through to undergraduate, postgraduate and research higher degrees.

AMC Principal, Associate Professor Shuhong Chai said the College prides itself on providing a world-class study experience and industry-relevant qualifications.

“Our students enjoy access to the southern hemisphere’s most advanced collection of maritime facilities, including a fleet of training vessels and autonomous underwater vehicles; ship simulators; engineering workshops; firefighting, survival and damage control facilities; and a unique cluster of hydrodynamic facilities which include a towing tank, model test basin and cavitation research laboratory,” Associate Professor Chai said.

“They gain skills that are in high demand and go on to work in fields as diverse as Defence, the shipping industry, oil and gas sector, and ports and logistics management. Their AMC qualifications are internationally recognised, which means their work can literally take them anywhere in the world.”

The Federal Government’s $90 billion investment in the continuous naval shipbuilding plan has led to an increase in demand for maritime engineers, naval architects and logisticians – and AMC offers nation-leading qualifications in those areas.

If you have an analytical mind and enjoy solving problems, a maritime engineering degree specialising in ocean engineering, naval architecture or marine and offshore engineering could be the perfect fit. The degrees are accredited by Engineers Australia and equip graduates with the skills to design, build and test some of the largest structures on the planet. Students also have the option of combining periods of university study with industry work placements as part of the Co-operative Engineering Program.

The career prospects for seafaring graduates are broad. They include working on domestic and international ships as well as in pilotage, marine surveying, terminal operations and stevedoring. Maritime and logistics management graduates are engaged in logistics, cargo handling, ports and terminals management, maritime law, operational planning and management, importing and exporting.

AMC’s coastal seafarer training programs meet the competency requirements as specified by the National Standards for Commercial Vessels Part D and are approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. All ocean seafaring programs are compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s STCW Convention, as amended in 2010.

So wherever your maritime interests lie, AMC can give you the necessary experience and skills you need to kickstart your career in this rewarding field.
