2021 Victorian Youth Championships wrap

Published Mon 19 Apr 2021

The Victorian Youth Championships returned with a blast over the weekend, with the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) playing host to some outstanding racing in tricky conditions.

It was a weekend of celebration after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s regatta.

Grey skies and a light breeze made way for sunny skies and a fair breeze ensuring all races were completed on the first day of action. Things were a bit trickier on day two, with shifting winds giving regatta organisers headaches resulting in only one race.

This year’s Championships were preceeded by a coaching clinic, which provided the opportunity for many sailors on the east coast to travel, train and race against each other for the first time .

Melbourne’s busy Port Philip Bay provided myriad challenges for the competitors, with the shifting winds and the regular sight of shipping containers passing by causing regular headaches.

“One minute you have steady breeze and the next minute the breeze would go due to a large shipping container shadowing the breeze,” said 29er sailor Tyler Dransfied from New South Wales.

Mornington Yacht Club’s  Laser Radial sailor Jack Eickemeyer was one of the athletes pleased to be back competing for a State Youth Championship.

“The conditions and the length of racing were sweet at the Victorian Youth Championships, given the breeze for the weekend was on the lighter side,” he commented.  “We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend of sailing.”

For the first time, the regatta had a substantial  number  of Sail Board entrants in in the LT and Techno Plus classes.  Both fleets came together on the start line providing the opportunity for sailors to race together.

“The buzz around the boat park for the Sail Boards was all about which Sailboard is the fastest in the conditions presented ,” noted William Grimshaw

There was intense competition in the O’pen Skiff, with sailors from Mordialloc Sailing Club and Gippsland Lake Yacht Club dominating the racing over the four days. Corrado Dorrington lead the pack with straight bullets.
