What is Youth Sail
Youth Sail incorporates the Westsail Coaching Clinic and WA Youth Championships and aligns with the national branding of Australian Sailing’s youth events, held nation-wide.
What is Westsail?
Westsail is a four-day coaching clinic for youth sailors, which has been running in the September school holidays for over 30 years.
WA’s best Coaches are involved in Westsail. All are fully qualified, possessing the appropriate national coaching qualification, first aid, Working With Children Check, Safety Boat Operator and other necessary accreditations.
Green Fleet Coaching Clinic
The Green fleet coaching clinic is targeted towards sailors who have recently completed a Tackers 3 learn to sail program or equivalent. The focus is around having fun and learning new skills. The Green fleet clinic is open to these classes - Optimist, Open Skiff, Pelican and Minnow.
The green fleet clinic will be run at Royal Perth Yacht Club.
What are the WA Youth Championships?
WA’s annual youth regatta, which complements individual Class championships and Club regattas, hosted at various times throughout the year. As per the Notice of Race, sailors must be aged under 23 years of age at 31 December 2024 in order to be eligible to compete.
Please view all important regatta information, including the Notice of Race >> HERE.
Who can attend Youth Sail?
We welcome all sailors and classes to attend Youth Sail.
Westsail is a youth event, therefore in line with the eligibility criteria for the WA Youth Championships, sailors must be under 23 years of age at 31 December 2024.
If your class is not listed in the dropdown menu on the registration form please get in touch with the event manager. A class will require a minimum of five boats in order to be eligible to participate and have coaching resources allocated. We encourage any youth class to join Youth Sail, please contact the WA office to discuss your involvement.
If you are a Green Fleet level sailor or unsure of your suitability to attend Youth Sail, please contact your Club Coach in the first instance, or the Australian Sailing WA office for guidance.
What does a typical day at the Westsail coaching clinic look like?
Class Coaches carefully consider the breakdown of their day’s activities in advance and make plans. Sometimes these are weather dependant and not confirmed on or closer to the day. Following time to rig and prepare for the day with a briefing, coaching sessions will include on-water and on-land components from approximately 10:00am to 4pm. On some days, the fleet group may stay on the water for the duration, taking lunch out. Other days, the group may do two on-water sessions with a lunch break ashore or spend a morning or afternoon on land. In any event, sailors are requested to come prepared with adequate sailing clothing, which is also warm. Suitable warm clothing for after and enclosed shoes, a towel and writing materials. Sun protection is also a must, regardless of the weather.
Coaching groups will debrief at the end of the day. Please note that on one evening a dinner will be held for all sailors and coaches, at Mounts Bay Sailing Club. It is important that sailors bring a change of clothes for dinner and enclosed shoes. Please note the pick-up times for each day.
The WA Youth Championships schedule is available in the Notice of Race HERE.
