Youth Sail Vic Coaching Clinic Sets Sail Despite Light Winds

The Youth Sail Vic Coaching Clinic continued its program today, although the light winds have proved to be a persistent challenge for the sailors. Nevertheless, the participants adapted to the conditions and made the most of the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge of the sport.

The morning session saw some areas with light winds, which gradually died out by 1 pm, leading to the afternoon session being diverted to off-water coaching. However, the coaches made the most of the situation by setting up TVs throughout the facilities for groups to use and providing plenty of visual aids to discuss tactics and review footage from the morning and the previous day.

In speaking with a group of sailors from the 420 class, it was clear that the clinic has been beneficial in helping them develop their skills in dealing with the current. Due to the light winds and strong currents, the conditions created challenges both up and downwind. One of the sailors shared, "It was good, we sort of got better with the current. Learning how to work with the current and stuff, even though you're in the light winds and things."

Despite the weather, parents attending the event were overall happy with the setting and the vibe. Many were seen working from the lawn overlooking everyone out on the water. One parent shared, "The coaches have been really engaging. It's got a nice vibe, no one is angsty. It's been calm and relaxed, just a good vibe."

The conditions were perfect for introducing newcomers to the sport, such as Gabby and her younger brother, who used the clinic as an opportunity to sail in the 29er class for the first time. In speaking with Gabby about her time at the clinic, her crew member (younger brother) enthusiastically exclaimed that they capsized well over 40 times yesterday (although actual reports specify 7-9 max). Regardless, their time on the water in the clinic led to significant improvements, with only a single capsize today and the opportunity to train with a spinnaker. Gabby's goals for this weekend's regatta are simply to get around the course, and for that we wish her all the best.

Unfortunately, the regatta ahead isn't forecasted to improve on the wind front, but the sailors and coaches remain optimistic and determined to make the most of the situation. The Youth Sail Vic Coaching Clinic continues to provide valuable opportunities for young sailors to develop their skills and passion for the sport, and we look forward to following their progress.
