The 2019/20 South Australian Youth Championship wrap

Published Mon 04 Nov 2019

The 2019/20 South Australian Youth Championship is arguably the highlight of the 2019/20 off the beach calendar for our sailors. It boasts the current top SA sailors and provides an opportunity for up and coming talent to be identified.

This year the 2019/20  South Australian Youth Championships was held at Largs Bay Sailing Club (LBSC) who are no stranger to hosting off the beach regattas.

Shevaun Bruland past SA president and now AS board member said ‘This regatta lays down the foundations for the 2019/20 season. Skippers and crew get to build a relationship and develop the skills necessary to compete at class state championships or nationals.’

The Optimist Open Fleet was one of the most competitive; Austin Higgins from BSYC took first place, with a tight battle for second place between Ellen Sampson and Charlie Piro. Ellen edged out Charlie for second place on a count back.

Laser 4.7 sailor Josh Hinks won 7 of the 8 races to take home the overall win ahead of Finlay Bunt and Benjamin Newman.

LBSC Commodore, Nick Neale, said “The forecast for the weekend looked great and thankfully we’ve had some awesome racing on day two, and got 7 good races in. It’s been great preparation for all the sailors heading to Nationals this summer”.

The International Cadet was won by Thomas Gordon and Jacob Miller, who won 7 of the 8 races, with Darcy Conry and Sophie Ward in second and Jack Kretschmer and Ila Chaplin in third.

In the O’pen Skiff Gold fleet Nicholas Ebourne took out first place with a straight run  of wins, with Tasman Grutzner hot on his heels in second, Tyndelle Bleakley came in close behind in third place.

Unfortunately due to year 12 exams, the 420 fleet was smaller than expected. The racing amongst the fleet was very close, with Ben Hinks and Byron Robinson taking first place, Alexi Wigglesworth and Jonas Barrett came a close second, with Harry Higgins and Taran Sanderson coming third.
