The Australian team heading to Samoa for the Pacific Games is now training on specific areas of need, with an emphasis on how athletes can best test their skills against our Oceanic neighbours as well as how they can learn and grow for future events.
The team of four will head off shortly to compete at the games, which will be held in Samoa between 7-20 July.
Mixed Multihull Class Coach Karyn Gojnich said the whole team welcomes the opportunity to represent Australia and grow the support of sailing in the Oceania regions – as well as meeting challenges.
“We are all looking forward to the friends we will meet and the culture we will experience. It should also be a fantastic competition, which will help us to develop and grow as individuals and competitive sailors into the future,” she said.
“As a multi-sport event it is a wonderful opportunity for our sailors to experience a games environment. There will be challenges, but these will help us all learn and grow for future events.
“Heading into the event there are a few unknowns, we are sailing with supplied equipment but this is equal for all competitors and I do not see as a huge obstacle.
“I believe our sailors will benefit from getting to know athletes from other sports and appreciate the commitment and dedication all apply to their individual pursuits. I hope our sailors are able to establish friendships across nations which is one of the truly rewarding experiences with international sailing.”
Paris van den Herik said she is in ‘the thick of it’ leading up to the Pacific Games but now training continues with a focus on more specific areas where she believes she needs to consolidate before the games commence.
“I am really looking forward to being there all together as a country, and being proud of where we come from, as well as learning new ideas and skills from other cultures,” she said.
“I love sailing so much, and even more when in a new setting, I’m sure the scenery is going to be absolutely gobsmacking in Samoa, so I’m really looking forward to that… I making sure that my body is being fuelled with energy in preparation to stay healthy and give it my best crack for the Green and Gold!
“As for racing in Samoa, all I can say is its going to be a stunning once in a life time opportunity, which I will make the most of in every race.
“Going into the event I would really love for my family, friends and team to know that I am so grateful for their endless support, which has enabled this opportunity, I wouldn’t be here today doing what I am doing without them so, thank you, and I hope I can make you proud.”
The sailing will take place from 9- 19 July, and you can track the athletes’ progress here.
