Final countdown to WA Youth Championships

Published Wed 23 Sep 2020

Entries are steadily rolling in for the 2020 WA State Youth Championships and the under 23 open (non-invite) four-day Westsail clinic which are set to kick in style with great weather forecast for the event. Held at Hillarys Yacht Club (HYC) and supported by the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation (regionally), WAIS, Yachting WA and Australian Sailing this event will see Westsail and the WA Youth championships occur during the September School Holidays from the 26 September - 1 October 2020.

Hillarys Yacht Club is located strategically in the heart of the northern corridor and has strong participation in learning to sail, junior, youth and adult programs plus hosts significant events during the sailing season.

Stefan Elliott-Shircore who finished 2nd at the 2020 Australian Youth Championships and 1st at Sail Melbourne International will be someone to watch at this year's event. 'It's been a strange year with bush fires affecting sailing over the summer, Covid-19 and news of youth nationals and world championships for 2021 cancelled; to gain any local training and racing at home is important to me. In WA I'm grateful to have time on water compared to some of my friends who live in Victoria who has not been on the water this season'.

Brothers Harry and Jack Joyner have moved across to Wind Foiling from the 29ers this will be an up and coming class to watch at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and in the Optimist Aaron Teo the reigning WA State Champion and 3rd placegetter at the Australian Optimist Championships. HYC is a like for like venue with Marseille, France the selected 2024 Olympic sailing venue, a stretched goal for some of the attending sailors.

The WA Youth Championships for many sailors will be the start of the Western Australian Sailing Season. Andy Fethers - WA Regional Manager, said the support HYC has offered in hosting this event will ensure it is going to be a beauty! Having had many meetings and the coaches personal development session here with Rick Charlesworth last week the coaches are ready and being up here has reminded him how the sailing conditions are ideallic for development and competition, he is really looking forward to putting the learnings into action.
