FAQ's regarding access to the Olympic class iQFoil equipment

Published Tue 24 Mar 2020

We are aware that many of you have questions regarding access to the Olympic class iQFoil equipment. This bulletin serves to provide an update on ordering and distribution information to assist you in making an informed decision around purchasing equipment.

Do I need to purchase the iQFoil equipment right now?

The decision to invest in new equipment should not be taken lightly. It is a big investment that must take in to consideration not only your personal financial circumstances, but also your current stage of windsurfing/windfoiling skill development, and your future intentions for your involvement. If you are new to windsurfing altogether, it will likely be beneficial to hone your skills on a non-foiling board first. If you are an experienced windsurfer looking to transition into foiling for the first time, you may wish to start on a beginner level foil. However, if you are an experienced foil racer and you want to pursue an Olympic pathway, and/or you wish to be highly competitive in open foil racing, then perhaps the iQFoil might be for you. Australian Sailing strongly encourages you to talk with your coach about the best equipment for your needs. If you do not have a coach, or are still unsure about the most suitable equipment for you, please feel free to get in touch with Australian Sailing and we will be happy to provide advice based on your personal circumstances.

If you decide that you would like to purchase iQFoil equipment, and you are in a personal financial position to commit to the purchase, now is a good time to make an order, as Australian Sailing are working with Starboard to make a group order to minimise cost and maximise delivery efficiency (more on this in a moment).

How much does an iQFoil set up cost and how do I make an order?

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the international financial market is uncertain. The Australian dollar is fluctuating considerably and frequently, and production and delivery processes are also impacted. Despite this, please be sure that Starboard are working directly with Australian Sailing to minimise the impact on Australian customers and are dedicated to supporting the positive growth of windfoiling as a sport and a sailing community in Australia at every opportunity.

If you are considering making an order for iQFoil equipment, please register your interest with Ian Fox from Starboard via email at ian@star-board.com. Ian will then provide you with information and updates regarding costs, ordering processes, and delivery information.

It is important to register your interest with Ian as soon as possible, and no later than Friday April 3rd if you wish to be considered for an order within the next Australian shipment.

Will Australian Sailing provide me with iQFoil equipment?

In line with our processes for all Olympic sailing classes, Australian Sailing will not be purchasing any iQFoil equipment for athletes, regardless of their status in the iQFoil Performance Pathway. All prospective performance athletes are responsible for the purchase and maintenance of their own equipment. In this case, Australian Sailing is simply providing advice regarding the purchase of this new Olympic equipment.
