2022 NSW Youth Championships - Day Two Wrap Up

Published Sun 02 Oct 2022

Our young sailors came ready for another exciting day on the water. However, the winds weren’t quite ready for them, and patience proved to be the key early in the day.
Thomas and Vicki from Hunters Hill Sailing Club said “We get to enjoy sailing out on the water together, you get to experience a lot of ups and downs, it’s very wild and very adventurous.”
Millie and Lucy from Mornington Yacht Club (VIC), and Lily from Flinders Yacht Club (VIC) said what they enjoyed about sailing is “Getting to know people from interstate, it’s fun to get on the water and race against your friends. It’s fun sailing two-handed, the teamwork is a lot of fun. It’s fun to talk to someone while you’re racing.”

The lack of wind didn’t stop our young sailors from having fun, the sun was warm on the skin, and many took the opportunity to cool off in the refreshing waters of Lake Macquarie. Slowly, the wind filled in and the sails took shape, a dance of colour ensued, and our juniors were off!

It took a little while for our wind foilers to get up, but slowly the breeze built and allowed them to take off and get some racing underway. In between races, the sailors took joy in practicing their foiling tacks and 360s for the camera.
After the long day, we spoke with Meg from Middle Harbour “While I didn’t have the best results, you just keep going and enjoy the fun and get going really fast.”

Brooke from Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron said “I love sailing because it can be quite variable and that proved to be true today. This event has been great, I’ve made a few new friends, we played tennis together and went slack lining.”

We’re excited the last day of the NSW Youth Championships where 170 boats and 205 sailors will wrap up their long weekend of sailing and take away lifelong friendships and great memories.
